Frequently Asked Questions

(Q) Do you have any puppies available?

(A)  The wait time for puppies here at Astercreek varies from 9 months to a year, depending on heat cycles and who we are breeding. I don't breed my females on a regular every six months or so as most of them don't come in every 6 months and even if they do we skip heats as needed for the female's health. I breed for quality and this means it takes me time to plan a breeding and be in a position to hold one back from the litter, though there are times I breed a litter and keep nothing back, it depends on if what I need to progress my program is produced.

(Q) What sizes/coats do you breed?

(A)  I currently raise miniature and small standard longhair and smooth dachshunds. We do not have plans for wirehairs at this time.

(Q) What colors and patterns do you raise?

(A)  We focus primarily on reds, red sables, creams, black and tans/creams, and dapples occasionally.

(Q) Are your dogs AKC?

(A) Yes, our dogs are AKC and we also show in the venues of UKC.

(Q) What activities do you do with your dogs?
(A) Currently, we show in the conformation ring and work on trick titles with our dogs. We currently have plans to start in barn hunt as soon as we can and some scent work too! We strive for very versatile dogs.

(Q) Are your puppies raised in your home? What kind of socializing do they get?
(A) Our puppies are raised in our home, as any should be! They start in our nursery pen and when they are starting to move around we graduate them to a bigger pen where they start to use a litter box. They get socialized to various sights, sounds, and objects from this point on. Before going home we start kennel training as well. Check out more info on our puppy raising page!

(Q) How much do your puppies cost?

(A) Between $2000 and $3000, depending on what type of home they are going to (pet or show/performance).

(Q) Why did you import dogs?
(A) We saw a lack of the original breed type in American dogs and wanted to merge the two to create some balance. The dream to import a dog has been one for many years. Taro was the beginning of this, and it happened in such a whirlwind that it almost didn't feel real.

(Q) How long have you been breeding?
(A) I was raised into the breed, however, my parent's dogs weren't AKC or anything special. Around 15 I started to get very interested in the show and purebred world of dogs. I joined a forum and started learning what I could. When I turned 18 I bought my first AKC chocolate and tan Dachshund. She was the start of everything I have now. I have been breeding for 14 years now.

(Q) Where are you located?

(A) We are located in Minnesota.
